ABIA Expansion

October 18, 2012 -- In a unanimous vote, Austin City Council members approved item 13 on the expansion of ABIA. The Chamber thanks its many members and investors who communicated their support for today's action.

Businesses need the infrastructure that helps them reach the international marketplace and the Austin Bergstrom International Airport, ABIA, is a critical component to reaching these markets.

Over the past 30 years, Austin has experienced an average passenger growth of about 4% per year – over the past several years we have outpaced the entire country through positive passenger growth. This year our airport's traffic is up 5.5% and the airport is now serving 9 million passengers a year. In addition the airport is an economic engine itself – Austin-Bergstrom generates $2.4 billion into the economy and supports over 40,000 jobs – 3,000 at the airport itself.

Maintaining the integrity of this nationally-recognized facility growing and supporting its expansion to meet regional demand, is a priority for our regional business community.
